When you use local SEO, the websites that are not related to your area are filtered out. This means that there is less competition. It also means that websites that are similar to yours, but that are not relevant to the user, are filtered out as well.

Each of your website pages should have at least two long-tailed keywords. It goes like this: a word such as “salon” or “hair salon” counts as a key word or key phrase. But, something such as “cheap hair salon for women” is a long-tailed keyword. If you are optimizing for local SEO, you will find that location based long-tailed keywords are very effective. For example, if your salon is in Greeneville, Tennessee, then a great long-tailed keyword would be “hair salon in Greeneville Tennessee.”

Do not forget that if you are adding your long-tailed keywords into your Meta keywords tag, that the comma separates them, so adding “Greeneville, Tennessee” with a comma between them is going to split the long-tailed keyword up.

As a side note, be careful of relying on place names that have duel meanings. For example, if your place name is in “Boring” in Oregon or “the bottle” in Alabama, then your keyword profile is not going to be as powerful because Boring and Bottle have meanings other than the place name.

Target users in your local vicinity

This is the main reason why you need local SEO, because the people near you are going to search for your business in your local area. For example, if you are a blacksmith then people in your local area are going to want to find your smithy. They will enter the keywords “blacksmith” and your local area, and if you have optimized for local SEO then your website will appear on the search engine results page.

Helps users to refine their search results

The user is going to want to be able to narrow down his or her search. One factor that he/she may wish to narrow it down by is location. If your website has sufficient local SEO, then your website will still appear in their search engine results.

People on mobile devices will often use GPS and other mapping technology to find their way around. It is not uncommon for them to do a local search around their area on the map. If your website has local SEO, then not only will people in your area find you, but people on mobile phones who are just visiting will also be able to find you too.
